My history teacher today made a comparison between America and the rest of the civilized world to Jocks and Nerds. He said that America is really just like a jock with no brains and the rest of the world is just like a couple of smart nerds always getting screwed over for there lunch money. Do you guys think that this is true. Is America really that screwed up? Does the rest of the world have the smarts but not the power? :???

Your history teacher should check his history. :)

Is your history teacher a grown-up nerd with a chip on his shoulder? That's a terrible analogy (not to mention a politically biased one. :lol)

No, he is actually really smart and seems to know alot about alot. Doesn't mean that I think that his analogy is correct.

To draw a parallel between schoolyard bullies and a nation with an aggressive foreign policy is completely inane and an attempt at simplifying an extraordinarily complex situation.

I would say that America has it's dumb times, yes. But I think we are highly discredited, even by our own citizens, and a lot of the time it's by people that really have no idea what they're talking about. I would only partially agree. I would say that we have too much power for our own good and sometimes choose not the best leaders, but we didn't get to the top by being a dumbass jock. And sometimes I wish I was as cool as all those guys that think that the US is the devil. Sigh.

I think Bill Bailey said it best.

America is the big schoolyard bully and England is the small pathetic smart weak kid America hangs around with so England won't get his own arse kicked.

The question is, if America's the Jocks, who are the Band Geeks? Who are the A/V kids? The stoners? The burnouts?

See, there's just a whole lot of analogy that goes wasted if you use that one.

Not the best analogy to use because honestly every country has their own share of stupid/smart people. To simply label America as a big dumb jock is highly incorrect as that is basically, like gondee mentioned, categorizing us based on our political aspirations. If you're basing it on that, then I'd agree. Otherwise I won't agree.

Oil is lunch money. America is the bully.

I makes sense. Just becuase the comparison doesnt cover all the sides of the situation doesnt mean it isnt true.

And as far as all americans saying it isnt true, you are like the bully's parents (voters?) who can't see what he does at school.

Hmm, I'll say partially true because I've found myself many times thinking America is stupid compared to other countries. Interesting analogy by your teacher, there.

Any country that has the means, but not the will to do anything about it is equally culpable. Where does that put the EU?

The EU is the idle bystander, the kid who doesnt have guts to put the foot down.

Technicaly the EU is a group of countrys. And so is excluded from your statement.

And alot of the people in the member countrys dont like the way it functions.

Where does Switzerland come in all of this?

You just can't discredit what flexxx said, you are missing the point.

Which bit of what flexxx said??? :???

I agree with both of his last two statements. The EU is weak as a young puppy.

I was just trying to point out the flaw in what mess said.

Well, my teacher said that America admires Denmark for their finacial sucess, becasue that we pay 60% in taxes i think, or i dont rember what it was in. (In the US the video games costs about 50 dollars right? :???
Well in Denmark they cost 75 dollars. :eek But Denmark still have pretty good financial control. So in that way i think that small countries can have better financial control and make it all work just as good as the big countries, if not better. :heh
PS. I voted Yes, and i dont want anyone to be offended by it. :|

Oh, I'm very much willing to discuss the legitimacy of the war in Iraq, and I most certainly understand vehement opposition to it, but that doesn't make this analogy any less ridiculous.

You have to admit that beyond all the different aspects there are to the world situation, there is some truth to the analogy. It's not taken out of thin air.

The analogy is largely accurate, but very undetailed.

I guess we can sum up the analogy as 50/50.
