kidding. i think a lot of its appeal is nostalgic; it was the first rpg i played and i was about 10 years old or so. it reminds me of a golden era of gaming where games relied more on compelling storytelling and character development despite being limited by 2-d animated sprites. nowadays i find that a lot of rpgs are sprawling epics ridden with plot holes and over-complicated battle systems (something that i feel ffxiii suffers from, despite its amazing graphics).
