Alright, so I really like coffee. Like it so much that I have devoted a ridiculous amount of time to it and, for the most part, know more about it than anyone I know. So I read about The Lodge and decided this would be a good spot to see if there were any other hardcore coffee enthusiasts on here.

Now when I say I know a ridiculous amount of information on coffee, I mean a truly ridiculous amount. I've done extensive research into the chemical reactions that make coffee and have studied many different aspects of the ancient beverage. (My current research is in coffee's ability to remove large, charged particles from a solution.)

I have also been roasting and blending my own coffee for about 2 years now. (Getting pretty darn good at it to now.)

Anyway, I guess I just want to see if there is any other coffee buffs out there that want to talk coffee, or maybe a home roaster or two that want to compare notes, or maybe, dare I say it, another person interested in the science of it. So if you're interested, let's hear it! Let's see how long before my talk of coffee bores you guys too. :heh

Yes, I can see you like coffee by looking at your avatar. :lol

I wouldnt say that I'm addicted to coffee, but I do love it. Having a cup of coffee together with a nice sandwich, cake, bun or chocochip cookie is pure pleasure. And even though I know its a bad habit, drinking coffee while taking a cigarette is just soooo damn good.

I love coffee, but if there's one I love even more, and that's Dimitri.

You are speaking of Kopa Luwaki, and it comes from the ass of a civet, not a monkey. First off, that shit ain't coffee, it is actually closer to tea than it is to coffee. What happens is that when the civet swallows the coffee cherry, the digestive track of the civet strips the cherry of its flesh coating and special enzymes in the civets system brown the coffee. This type of enzymatic browning is the same as you would find in tea, very different from the non-enzymatic browning of traditional coffee due to roasting.

Normally when you roast coffee, you use up water inside the green bean to fuel the Maillard reaction. (Think of when you cook meat, how it turns brown, when you toast bread, all the same type of reaction.) This non-enzymatic browning is responsible for a majority of the flavor components, without you end up with, well, tea. Essentially what I'm saying is that the type of browning that happens in Kopa Luwaki coffee stunts the true flavors of the coffee and inhibits the flavor components from forming. So to answer your question, no, I haven't tried it and nor will I, if I have to pay for it. imho, that coffee is a poor excuse for a cup from the scientific view of it, so I don't foresee it being worth the hundreds of dollars they charge for it.

I heard about this coffee, but you saying it's closer to tea sparks my interest greatly. I love tea. Might be because I'm British that helped me love tea. Tis my favourite drink, for any occasion, any time of the day, tea is the one. I drink tea on and off all day. I don't mind coffee, but tea is much better.

Latter comment - I guess the price of this bean is due to not everyone having a civet roaming about which they can feed, and them fumble beans out of it's arse. That's the value of it. Is it a bean worth it because of flavour? Nay.

I like you though, you're have an unusual love for something I wouldn't have imagine people being so fixated on. Coffee. I don't know much about it, but feel free to tell me why you decided to learn more about it?

I was really addicted to it, and I tried to give it up, and I lasted about two months and then I started drinking decaf regularly. It's quite a good drink even without the buzz.

I drank an Ethiopian Harrar that I got from a local coffee house for years until they switched to an eco-friendly sustainably farmed fair trade supplier and it sucks balls. I haven't found anything that has come close yet.
