I do many races and this is what I have found that helps me gain more control. Please feel free to add to these tips.

1) Camera: I find that the best camera for racing is the one that is zoomed in all the way. It feels like turning is easier and more precise. I can stay on the snow easier and avoid flying off the ground from all the annoying bumps. For trick it, I would assume that the zoomed out cameras would be easier so you could see more of the track. You hit select to change cameras.

2) Holding forward makes you go faster.

3) when landing after big air, hold the right stick in the direction you want to go a split second before you land. THis sets up your next path if it isn't the line of your jump.

4) holding the left 2 button can be used as a brake. It can also make you turn tighter or prevent you from flying into a crevasse by grinding the edge of that crevasse.

I always use the far cam for everything. Maybe that's why I suck at racing.

...

No, it's definitely just my lack of dexterity.

I really do wish the steering was tighter on this game that's the one thing i would want for any potential sequel, it seems once you are even slightly offline on alot of tracks you might aswell restart as making corrections is very hard. I know they had a dead spot issue on the PS3, it feels like that exists in some way on the 360 aswell.

I have tried using the near camera but it didn't really make a difference, also holding forward on the left stick sometimes causes me to drift slightly in either direction which can cause problems.

I'm with you MdX, My racing is a lot worse than my tricking. My hands never do what my brain tells them to do :glare I've yet to try the close camera however, must be pretty cool for racing

Someone else on here said that I didn't know is that in racing, if you hold down L2 (reg. grind button) your board won't spin all over the place when turning over little bumps. I've tried this and had some positive results, but be cautious when rails are near by because then you're doomed and fall into the random control of rails.

I tend to race, I've never been real up close, always middle, but I'll have to try that out. The only thing that worries me is that if I don't know everything about the track I might be more susceptible to hitting those random rocks, logs, or dumb bumps everywhere.

Thanks for the advice though

I tend to race with the close camera but after a while I forget which one I'm using haha It changes on its own sometimes and I rarely notice :P

I really hate the close camera, it seems to narrow the FOV as well, but I could be imagining it. Either way, having your character bigger on the screen gives the illusion of the scenery being smaller, and I'd rather it looked magnificent and grandiose :)

On the other hand, it's as close as you're going to get to first person and zoomed in view is a different experience.

I agree, I just think a first person snowboarding game would be dreadful :P

Pay heed to trees and rocks and things, the game likes to fling you to the side if you get too close to them. It's like a reverse rail magnet. It's nauseating when I've lined up to bypass a tree but then the game decides that I'm too close to it and "assists" me in turning away from it and messes up my line. Sometimes it'll even cause you to crash. Say you're about to hit a tree so you turn left, but then the game wants to pass it from the right side and you end up going straight into the tree. I also suspect it's a reason why people have trouble grinding trees, as it will steer you away from them half the time. I'm a grown man, I can dodge stationary objects.

I've always sucked at racing so a couple of things that helped me out:

If the trees are fairly small and there's only a couple of them, I find I can generally ignore them and the game will automatically move me around them. I have more success that way than trying to dodge them - that usually ends in tears.

Also, it's not the fastest but I found I got a lot better in race by not pushing forward and just tapping left and right to make small steering adjustments. Basically sacrificing speed for precision. Found I could hit flares a lot more consistently, and at the start of some tracks I know that, for example, two taps to the left will line me up perfectly with something (so I use it in trick a bit too). Eventually I'll get better at steering while pushing forward, but until then this helps me a lot. And I'll always be able to use it in trick.

another tip i have noticed in tunnels. even though they are my greatest enemy, they can be quite helpful while maintaining speed down a track. like if there is a crevasse, just ride on the wall. it will take some practice to get it, but it helps.

You just hit upon another reason I really like racing on cave drops like Red Light and Longhorn. Once you start competing with the fastest riders you end up boosting on the side of walls instead of jumping over gaps or other obstacles. Gets pretty intense.

This.

This is an instinct I've carried over from racing games (Need for Speed, etc.). It really is extremely effective when you've got to hit a specific spot or line.

There is certainly a deadzone on the ps3 controller. This is frustrating because it means you cannot make very small adjustments to your line. I wish you had the option to remove the deadzone or alter stick sensitivity. I think this would solve the problem.

Another tip I have would be to avoid "over-correcting" your turns. This holds for pretty much all racing games. When you turn right, you don't want to turn more than your first turn when you turn to the left at the end of the turn or you will fly off of your line. If you imagine the left stick is a steering wheel, you want to rotate it in half circles when you turn, then keeping holding the left stick and rotate it in the opposite direction to turn back onto your line. Never release the left stick at any time if you want maximum speed. If you want to sacrifice for control then bildi's method works pretty well.

On very challenging courses where "cutting corners" is not possible (O.S.A.). You sometimes do not want to boost at the start of the turn. Boost when the turn is 50% complete. At least thats how it should work using realistic physics to get max speed/control during a turn.

Also be aware that holding the left stick forward on very steep inclines can sometimes make you do a nose press and lose speed. I don't know how or why this happens.

Ice axes work on any surface from what I can tell and can really help control.

Also, I've noticed if you are having trouble turning while on ice, slightly pull back on the left stick while turning and it will grip very well. Instead of holding the stick at 3:00 to make a right turn, hold it at 4-5:00.
