Looking at the background landscape, definitely either that or Africa. But Africa is mostly tunnels so you might have hit the nail on the head there.

It has to be Mt Fuji. The cherry trees and the torii gates were all there. Looking neat either way.

I thought the Edge review was really poor. Then I read the NowGamer one! Christ that's a terrible review! Having played the demo to death I already know they are waaaaaaaaaaaaay off the mark with this title. They must have been rubbish at it & not given it the time it needs to get good & enjoy to the max.

Nice to see that most reviews are very positive & looks to heading to an above 8/10 average. :) Spot on from what I can tell (will know on Friday!)

Edge is a little butthurt. EDGE is the Pitchfork of gaming review sites. I wouldn't be too worried about it.

They're probably still bitter about all their unsuccessful legal cases and decided to take it out on the gaming community.

This is something I've been wondering about for a while now.

Quote:
the best news is that SSX restarts a track in 3-4 seconds, so you won't be losing a lot of time to loading screens.

Wasn't it always like that? You selected Restart and you were instantly back in the beginning, why has it been such a big thing now.

After reading this thread I noticed everyone seems to be jumping on the negative reviews and just assuming the reviewers were "shit at the game" and "all the veterans love the game" or whatever. I'm as veteran as it can get short of like 3 people who still post (rip Allo Chiropractor) and I canceled my pre-order after playing the demo. All the negative reviews I read seem to have disliked the game for the same reasons I did, and nobody in here has challenged any of those complaints. I know this is the SSX fansite but a lot of reactions still reek of fanboy.

If you guys will humor my soapbox I'd love to enjoy this game and would like to hear some responses to the following legitimate negative points from NowGamer's 5.2 review:

- Courses are dull, bland, unmemorable
- Landing tricks is too forgiving and unrewarding
- No character interaction or multiplayer
- Deadly Descents are generally unfun/trial and error (haven't played these but it seems to be a nontrivial, universally disliked feature)

For me personally:

- Courses are dull, bland, unmemorable
I can see this, yes. I haven't been through all the drops yet but some stuff does feel very similar at times.

- Landing tricks is too forgiving and unrewarding
I totally agree with this. It bugs me that there's no skill in lander ubers anymore. You used to have to know the timing of tricks, etc

- No character interaction or multiplayer
I've heard the characters interacting with each on the track, calling each other out, etc. There's no interaction cutscenes though. And there is mp, it's not traditional mp though and I miss the tradition mp. But if this is all we can get, it's not horrible. I thought ge's were gonna suck but they're not that bad. Yes, no chat sucks and no actual start line sucks. I've been saying this all along.

- Deadly Descents are generally unfun/trial and error (haven't played these but it seems to be a nontrivial, universally disliked feature)
I find them to be unfun in the world tour but I really enjoy them in explore. I like that you can go through (at your own pace for some) and when you get to the bottom, you restart at the top and cycle through and the track gets harder and trickier. (Edit: I do hate oxygen regardless, it's the worst in my opinion and not even remotely fun.)

I agree with some of the negative points but I would still give this a solid 8.5 or 9 depending on what day you get. I'm highly enjoying explore and fighting with ghosts. I'm a half a second off of one of batty's runs in a race.

The courses are very similar to the backcountry peaks of SSX 3 - there are no crazy city tracks, but unmemorable? No. There are sections of tracks that are amazing, you need to play the whole game before make a blanket statement like the tracks are bland. Each region has a theme, and they are all based on the backcountry idea, and that theme can get tiring if you're not a fan of it, but overall to say they are dull or unmemorable is not true.
Quote:

Yes, this is true, and the reason this was done is because the control is of your character is not at the same level as past games, nor are the tracks such that you will know exactly which jump you can do off each kicker. This was a compromise for the new physics system which makes is more difficult to control your character in the minute fashion of past games, but allows you to do so many more tricks and ride many more places than past games.
Quote:

No character interaction is untrue, they say stuff to each other when they run into each other, and characters conversate with pilots in cutscenes in World Tour. No multiplayer is absolutely a valid complaint, and has been mentioned in almost every review as a negative with the game. But the RiderNet features makes up for a lot of the negatives with no head-to-head, and to say the game sucks without it is unfair.
Quote:
- Deadly Descents are generally unfun/trial and error (haven't played these but it seems to be a nontrivial, universally disliked feature)

To say they are all unfair trial and error is doing them an injustice. Some of them I love - like the cold deadly descent where you have to stay in the light, and the avalanche deadly descent is awesome as well. Some of them I loathe - Pulse Goggles suck and so does Darkness. But they provide challenge, variation and excite people who may tire of the standard formula. And to be blatantly honest, the game wouldn't have been made without this feature. EA would not approve a standard SSX - it'd nixed two previous projects based on the old games. So I will take Deadly Descents if it means we can continue the series.

Is it a perfect game? Nope. But it's much better than a 5.2. I'd say the 8.2 metacritic average is fair, I have issues with a lot of the game, I hate anything that involves falling into a pit and will avoid those courses like the plague. But there are 153 events and 62 different courses BD. I have at least 3 ranges that don't have any pits at all. And the game introduces some incredible stuff like wingsuits that add quite a bit to the core experience.

If you want to be humoured, I’m happy to do so but it's only based on my time in the demo. :heh
- Courses are dull, bland, unmemorable
I was worried about this earlier in development and made several posts about it, but I found the two demo tracks very memorable. Based on vids, I’ve seen a handful of other memorable tracks. I’m figuring there’s at least 10 memorable tracks which would put it on par with the other games (I was never a “Tokyo Megaplex lover” so if that’s their definition of “memorable”, I’m not on the same page anyway).

- Landing tricks is too forgiving and unrewarding
It’s forgiving, but that just means people will ultimately push it further, just like they did when SSX3 introduced autocorrect. In terms of unrewarding, hell no. Because I push my luck, landing feels great and they’ve got an awesome nice “fanfare” when you land, even if it ain’t fireworks.

- No character interaction or multiplayer
I heard a bit of interaction in the demo between characters at the start of races (if that’s what they mean). Otherwise, the pilots talk to the characters constantly, which is a form of interaction (although I turn the pilot off). And yeah, there’s no head-to-head with a timer countdown. Fair enough, but I’ll just leave the chopper at the same time as others if I’d like head to head. It doesn’t even have to be exactly the same time, but I realise some people are more anal about this than me.

- Deadly Descents are generally unfun/trial and error (haven't played these but it seems to be a nontrivial, universally disliked feature)
I haven’t played so I can’t comment yet, but what annoys me a little about these comments is if DDs were in 2D with sprite-based graphics, I’m sure some of these folks would say “I love the awesome old-school brutal difficulty where memorisation is required to even get to the bottom!!!!”. :P

Also, I have to wonder why my 73 year old mother can get good enough in the demo to earn silver medals after an hour or two (with the new control scheme), when some reviewers have so many basic control problems.

Now, my mum is not brilliant at games - while she got through the campaigns in Tricky and SSX3 many times over, she always found showoff very difficult, and she finds games like Mario and Mass Effect pretty much impossible.

Now, if reviewers are having the following problems:

- “...the tendency for riders to carve off in bizarre directions when landing, and the in-game camera messing around with which direction is which...” as in nowgamer; and
- “Building up your trick points to enter a Zen-like Super Tricky state with unlimited boost and some fantastic character-specific tricks unleashes a flurry of fan-pleasing madness, but these moments are hard-earned and fleeting, rather than the game’s heart and soul” as in the Edge review

and my 73 year old mother is not having these problems, I have to wonder if these guys should be writing an SSX videogame review in the first place...

8/10 - Very good

"Conclusion:SSX can be a bit difficult to get into for beginners. You should read on how to do to achieve the best results, because I think the game is bad at explaining it. Once we got into it, however, it is the best snowboarding game of this generation in my opinion. For many of the SSX fans the game seems tailor-made, that should however be a gift from the gods that they've been waiting for a long time and if you are a SSX fan, you could increase the grade one or two bars. This is the SSX fans have been waiting for."
