I hope the teachers succeed, it'll ruin those peoples' lifes later on if they keep on smoking....
Not my opinion, just a simple fact.

well, Kav, i think it boils down to the fact that i'm ABLE to smoke around you, so my instinct reaction to you telling me not to is 'well i'm allowed, so i can do it if i want.'

i understand why you don't like it, believe me i do, but assuming that everyone is as bothered by it as you are is not only a generalization, but is kind of pretentious. we're comparing mcdonald's and babies to your problem with smoking because that's LIFE dude. it just sounds, for the lack of a better term, bitchy to be asking to 'well, just don't do it around me.'

simply for the fact that there are no rules against it (even though i think there are other reasons as well), your asking me or telling me to go away because you don't like me smoke is almost offensive. i have every right to do what i want with the air as you do, and if you don't like what i'm doing, then go away. i shouldn't have to go away so YOU can have YOUR air the way YOU want it. you don't accommodate me, so why would i accommodate you? if it was up to me i would smoke in my house, in a restaurant, on the train, etc., but i'm accommodating everyone else AND there's rules against it, so i don't. (i actually wouldn't want to do that, btw, just for the sake of argument).

all i'm saying is that you have no right to tell me to go away if i have no right to tell you to go away. please, if you don't want to be around me smoking, then YOU can go away.

Like I said, my point was to not do it in public or heavily-populated places and be weary that others have problems with it, not that when you see me you need to scour and run. :lol Also I never said smokers were the minority. I don't know how to make myself any clearer when I say the words "I have no problems with you doing it, I just don't want it done near me". It's not pretentious because smoke makes me sick. If you were allergic to peanut butter and it was a norm to smoke peanut butter on the streets, would you not feel the same way? Also "want" =/= "If you do it I'll rip your head off". You have every right to do it. Just as you don't want babies screaming in your ears, I don't want people smoking in my face. Doesn't mean it won't happen.

In the state of Queensland Australia there is a law against smoking within 10 meters of the entrance to a building and in parks. That doesn't leave smokers many options. Many air-conditioned apartment blocks have by-laws against smoking. The time will come when there will be few places you can actually smoke.

Well frankly, if I need to urinate, you better watch out because I'll do it whether you're out of the way or not.

yeah this is generally the case in the states too. i think they're pretty lax about both, especially the parks thing, but in general you can't smoke near an entrance to any building.

i think it's funny that airplanes have a no smoking sign still.

Lately I find that I resort to these methods of satisfacion more and more often. I never used to drink heavily in my teens and I used to scoff at the "cool kids" who were out drinking. But the past year, maybe longer, I've started to get drunk more often, as a way to enjoy an evening and just hang out and do crazy stuff. I've never seen myself as a big drinker but now that I think about it I've been drunk every weekend for at least once a week for the past month at least, maybe more.

It's probably the general concensus that it's very negative to get drunk regularly, but sooo many people do it and come out fine, so it's very hard to argue against once you realize how enjoyable everything is when youre drunk.

And tobacco, another bad thing. I've never been a smoker either but lately, like the past month I've started to take a cig every now and then for social purposes, when hanging out at work or whatever, and since i learned to inhale properly I'm starting to like the kick I get from it, I feel relaxed and at ease... Probably smoking no one can say is a good idea becuase you WILL be addicted, no doubts about it...

Probably getting baked is even more controversial, even though it shouldnt be! fewer people die from cannabis than from alcohol or tobacco and yet they're legal... I had a very staunch viewpoint on cannabis as a dangerous gateway drug, but then I tried hash when I was too wasted to say know and I found it to be amazing... Overnight my idea about cannabis changed 100%, and I've smoked twice since then with only nice effects, I sat with a friend just eating candy on my bed for 2 hours. And it's not addictive, and its not dangerous if you keep it under control.

So, I ask you, what are your thoughts on these three vices? What's so wrong with using any avaliable means to feel good and relax and hang out? I'm only 20 still, it's not gonna harm me in the long run but I know there's a big risk of a downward spiral, but as long as that doesn't happen, is there any harm done? Obviously I'm pondering this myself so I'd like to hear some thoughts...

Everything except tobacco is fine in moderation. I smoke, and I started casually. As someone else said, it WILL increase, and difficult to stop. The problem I see with your current drinking habbit is, it's easy for that to spiral, more so at the event of a sudden death of someone close to you (for example) you may find that drinking help you with the pain of it. This of course can dip you over that level where drinking goes from a relaxing weekly drink, to a dependence on it. I drink very rarely, but I know people who've had their lives ruined by it. That's the argument against it, in moderation it's fine, but certain things can trigger a dependence. For me, since I don't drink, I wouldn't be drinking to help me through anything.

Again on smoking, you can never truly understand why you shouldn't smoke until you're addicted to it, the quote of "don't start" didn't have the same impact on me as it has now I smoke. I started at the age of 22.

Smoking weed. I've smoked it. And out of the three I view it as the least harmful. If you start smoking large doses of it regularly, it won't be good (paranoia, etc). I had a friend from school who smoked it, he ended up doing harder stuff (gateway drug as they say). Most people who think they are addicted to weed are actually addicted to nicotine, since a lot of people mix their weed with tobacco. So if you are to smoke it, don't mix with tobacco. I'd rather be addicted to weed, though I've read it isn't an addictive substance itself, but more of an addiction to it's effects. The more you smoke it the more you'll need to gain the same high. You build a tolerance to it, thus needing more to gain the effects.

So for me it's like this. I've tried all three, and the only one of the three that I do everyday is smoking tobacco. Don't even smoke tobacco socially, just avoid it.

I just don't think you can just label them as good or bad. I think they all exist for something and have pros and cons. Drugs aren't as simple as people try to make them out to be.

Recreational drug use should be as much of someone else's business as them knowing what your last meal was. But people should know that their life affects the people closest to them for better and worse and it is selfish to continue self destruction when people are dependent on you.

I'm an extremist Libertarian, so naturally I vote for all of them being legal, though I certainly don't advise using any of them. They're forms of recreation, and just like everything in that category there are costs, but they should be up to the individual to decide for themselves. I chose no to synthetics, tobacco, and opiates, but yes to alcohol and caffeine, but why should I be able to decide for other people? That'd be rather arrogant of me.

Also I agree with Khalpz entirely. I'm basically restating what he said for anyone who didn't fully understand (though it was much more concise than I put it).

My ten cents is.

If the only person you're causing any harm to is yourself, knock yourself out. Everyone has the right to choose for themselves.

Plenty of fun stuff has trade offs. Even SSX has RSI :)

I hate cigarettes with a passion. Would never smoke them but I have family that smokes so I don't hate the smokers (In case anyone thought that is what I meant :P ) Usually I hold my breath when I walk past people smoking (And in NYC that's a lot of people). I've neevr tried weed but I have friends who smoke it. I'll be willing to try it once but that's about it. And drinking I only do with friends or during parties. So like 10 times a year max maybe even less.

I have a similar feeling towards cigarettes. dont like the object but that doesnt affect my feelings towards the individual.
I thought id try weed once so I researched it and had found no accredited negativity towards it so tried it and loved it since.

I was pushed into smoking weed. Like literally. They put the bong in my lap and pushed my mouth onto the pipe. They told me to relax, so I did. "Couldn't be that bad" I thought. This was in Year 8.
I'm in Year 10 now, and I've smoked a lot of times since then. I love it when there's like 3 of us sitting in a friends bedroom, someone pulls out a bong, and we get high. It's funny I guess. But also extremely stupid. As for alcohol, the first time I was properly drunk was New Years. I have been drinking a lot since then, just last Wednesday I was off my face at our school's swimming carnival. Ergh.

Don't do drugs, kids.
It's shit.

I've had lots of experience in all of these fields and many more similar fields. From my experiences:

Tobacco: 100% Evil.
Alcohol: Good bits and bad bits.
Weed: ~95% good.

Tobacco: destroys your lungs and throat, gives you cancer, takes all your money, crazy addition potential (ive never understood this bit though, i hate the taste, the smell, the niccy rush, the harshness, everything about it, nasty), makes you irritable, makes exercise difficult due to shortness of breath, it can reduce your appetite though, but you'll still get fatter from less exercise slowing down your metabolism. on an empty stomach it can make you feel very, very ill.
people say it has a calming effect, all i get is a sickening effect. i see no point to tobacco. why is it legal and weed isnt? its a really messed up situation.

Alcohol: On the good side, it makes things funnier, it washes away your pointless inhibitions. Causes an awesome feeling at the time. You'll have fun. Makes sexy times more likely. makes dancing more fun. makes you do stupid things.
On the bad side, it tastes horrible & is literally a poison. is very addictive to some people. causes your brain to swell, overdose potential is serious, especially on an empty stomach. makes you feel horrible the next day. makes you do stupid things.

Weed: Why it's good: Staves off cancer. Increases appetite. Helps sleeping. Calming. When you first discover it, it's like rediscovering yourself. Like being born again, and experiencing all of lifes various challenges and such as though you were just a child again. everything is much more interesting, your creativity can be launched through the roof to superhuman levels.
Its like a magnifying glass, that tends to blur the negative things but not always. For example, a really nice taste will taste better, and a really nasty taste will still taste REALLY NASTY. but a taste thats sort of meh will now taste quite nice. this applies across the senses.

Why it's ~5% bad: burning and inhaling any plant matter isnt going to be 100% healthy. there's vaporising to overcome this, but its not quite as nice as smoking it in a pipe or a bong. while there's not really any physical addiction, a strong mental bond can form, or dependence on its many medical properties. Many people mix their weed with tobacco and wrap paper around it and smoke that too, making it kinda unhealthy with this method of administration.
It can make you eat too much. depending on location, it can cost a lot.
you build a tolerance to it and it takes more to get you as high, eventually you reach a sort of flatland on the tolerance graph though.
and some people arent cut out for smoking weed due to existing "defects" or something, like, if you have a serious case of schizophrenia, it might be a good idea to steer clear of the ganja. BUT, at the same time, it could improve you. if youre really paranoid, you should probably avoid it.

Without weed I have:
Insomnia - I find it nearly impossible to fall asleep.
An almost non existant appetite, and a hatred for most foods. my tastebuds have always been EXTREMELY picky about what they'll accept as nice tasting food. i have to force myself to eat enough to survive.
social anxiety. (ive mostly shaken this off now with the realisation that in many cases i dont give a fuck about what most people think about me, i am who i am, and if they arent happy with that, poor them.)
OCD.
a shit memory (ive always had it though)
perhaps some schizophrenia.

with weed I have: a nearly insatiable appetite
no insomnia
hardly any anxiety at all
only traces of OCD
an almost non existant short term memory
perhaps some schizophrenia

weed makes me a happier, healthier, more generous, generally nicer, person.

Taking a break from the buds for a month.
Wish me luck people. If all goes well and I'm fine for a month I'll think I'll just stop completely and live off goon bags.

Also 420 was good.
Smoked out most of my friends, and was the last to comedown.

Every time I come back here and read this topic, I think about how naive I was when I was 20 and posted it.

I've been a pack-a-day smoker since then.

Being drunk, I've both been arrested and had sex with a girl 7 years my junior.

And weed stole 6 months from my life, 6 months of just watching movies, jerking off, and being depressed every time I got sober.

It's had its good sides and I'm unsure how much I regret, but it still feels weird to go back and read the first post.
