Super Tricky hard to get, tell that to Mr 51million! I don't mind if it's their honest opinion but the bad reviews seem to be written by folk who only got the game a day or so ago.

EDGE:

"In looking outside itself for inspiration, SSX has found a worthy infrastructure to establish an online community and culture. But this same approach has found the brand veering away from some of the fun and fireworks of yesteryear, leaving its more seductive silly side out in the cold. "

look the main point of this review, he complains about SSX not being like the old SSXs and by that he means that there are no fireworks and sillyness.

one more thing, all these reviewers that gave it a bad score suck at playing the game, why don't they become at least decent before writing a shitty review? You can't enjoy it if you constantly rage and fail but it's not like SSX has unfair challenge or anything like that.

and WHOOP! SSX preorder numbers are looking not bad at all:

Never heard of NowGamer.

Ultimately, he's entitled to his opinion, but as some people have noted already, they claimed multiplayer was "N/A / 10" and factored that N/A into the average as a score of 0/10. Impressive.

quote from the review: "Again, these can make the act of stringing trick sequences together far too simple – so much so that the underlying code appears to bend the rules of physics to accommodate some pretty unlikely sequences, from time to time."

He's definitely entitled to his opinion, and makes some valid points, this just made me giggle. OH MY GOD HOW DARE SSX HAVE UNLIKELY TRICK SEQUENCES hahahaha :)

Yes because all of us veterans at merq HATE THIS NEW GAME.

Jesus; I hate it when people who review and play everything suddenly think they're an authority on the entire series. Get a life.

No no, he said it was a poor experience for everyone, so it obviously is. There's no getting around that.

Whelp, better cancel my game from arriving to my house...

I have to say that the negative reviews are #1 - 'nit-picky' in that they do focus on 1-3 minor aspects that aren't game-breaking by any means, yet that lowers their score a ton.

#2 - The level of difficulty in certain parts. I am an old-school gamer @ age 36 and games back in the day were much more difficult, even impossible in many instances (see the myriad SNES/NES games), yet they were enjoyed and appreciated.
Game reviewers must be either very young or lack the patience that is required to refine ones skill (which leads to rewarding play) and stink of ADD/ADHD for if they simply can't 'master' a game within 2 hours they put it down and move on to COD- 'take your pick'.

So now that the SSX embargo is up, I can tell you that it's generally pretty great and only occasionally kinda busted. Review later.

Hhmmm. Had it been Ryan reviewing it...

Should you buy this game, YES!

WHY: A beloved extreme sports franchise gets rebooted with realism and asynchronous online play.

SSX

Developer: EA Canada
Platforms: PS3, Xbox 360 (Version played)
Released: February 28th (Xbox Live)

Type of game: Snowboarding sports game with online multiplayer .

What I played: Completed Story Mode in about 8 hours; spent about 4 hours playing race and trick events mode across various maps as well as online modes.

Two Things I Loved

* This SSX still feels like an arcade experience, but one where the real world peeks through in enticing ways.
* Tricking off the helicopter is awesome in a "that's how high I am?!" way. Pulling a grind or a grab off of the whirlybird's chassis never gets old. Do it as much as you can.

Two Things I Hated

* The subtle pressure to spend, spend, spend. Even if you don't ever drop a dime on the in-game currency, you feel like you should. That's insidious.
* In a game centered around character design and wild trick stylings, how are the motion comic character intros so bad? See the above for proof.

Made-to-Order Back-of-Box Quotes

* "Trickier, prettier and more varied than ever!" - -Evan Narcisse, Kotaku.com
* "Makes me want to jump out of a helicopter and get chased by an avalanche!" -Evan Narcisse, Kotaku.com

Couldn't have put it better myself deyessorc. I'm 38 and have watched younger gamers trying to play old skool (pre-console) games. At first, they're laughing their nuts off about how crap it looks, as I laugh at them at just how utterly shit they are at them. After a few minutes they can't put them down as Old uncle Sparks shows them how it's done. No infinite lives, no second chances, 1 sprite collision, game over.... :pimp. One younger relative ended up crying coz he couldn't beat my score. His dad had to physically drag him off the console. ADD/ADHD is bang on the money for most gamers (and by the looks of it, some reviewers).

Granddad Sparks. :pimp

P.S. can't bloody wait to get this on Friday!

Hehe, I want to make sure I have you both (Titan and Sparks) on my PSN (assuming this is the console you have) and any others that care to add me (deyessorc). I appreciate the community on this board.

I agree. What's ironic is that you CAN pick up SSX and do impressive looking stuff straight away. They want games which are easy to start playing, but when they get one... they say it's too easy? It's like they haven't even noticed how tough the competition is when you're fighting for scores against friends. Yes, the game is definitely very easy for anybody to start playing, but it's incredibly difficult to become pro and really master everything it has to throw at you. I think that's a fantastic range of difficulty for a game to have.

Yes, don't get me started on the focus on graphics now-a-days. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the leap forward that each current gen console brings to the graphics table but the best games throughout the history of gaming have been legendary regardless of if they had great graphics or not. Let's face it, the Zeldas of old (OoT, Majora's Mask), the Marios of old, the NES/SNES metroids, the older Metal Gears (if stealth is your thing), the older final fantasy's...etc. have dated graphics...but do they hold up today?? Yes!

People still revere these games based upon story, gameplay usually and always over graphics when rating a game in terms of classic status.

I love your one-time-sprite collision comment = death. That is so true of those games lol.

Absolutely, that is the sign of a well-made game. One that the casual can pick up and play and have fun, yet for those very skilled it can be very tough to master. SSX has always seemed to be in that category. I am not a beast in the SSX realm like many, yet I am greatly looking forward to going back and forth in the one-upping game between those on my list because they have this implemented in the online!! This is brilliant and how online (not always a big fan) games should go competition-wise in the future. It reminds me a bit of how Zen pinball is - you are notified when your friends surpass your score. Love this.

Once again, maybe we're biased because we love the game already and many of us are pretty good at it, BUT... did the reviewers even try to compete against another person who was actually good? It's like they said "oh man I got 2 million points without really trying, by my past SSX standards that's amazing! this must be easy."

they probably never had that moment of "Oh my god... how the hell did that person get 25 Million?!? must beat them..."

"VERDICT: When things are going to plan and you are tricking like crazy and executing impossible manoeuvres, SSX exudes a feeling like no other videogame out there. The exultation you’ll feel when hitting the biggest jump in the world and grabbing onto a helicopter is immeasurable; pure arcade joy.

To those who have missed it, or even newcomers wanting something different from everything else out there, SSX is an essential purchase. An absolute love letter to the fans who have waited so patiently, SSX is back baby, and it’s back with a bang."

Good:
    Gorgeous visuals.
    Brilliant audio.
RiderNet has become the perfect evolution of Autolog.
    Eye watering-ly fast.
    Choc full of replay-ability.

Bad:
Lack of a multiplayer mode in the traditional sense.
Last few events in World tour are unforgiving.

SSX Review (Xbox 360) - Operation Sports
http://www.operationsports.com/reviews/652/ssx/

Quote:
SSX is the prime example of what happens when you think through your game design and you actually relaunch a series with a gameplay plan which isn't based off of anything except your own imagination. The game throws the conventions of extreme sports games out of the window, balances out the gameplay and ultimately succeeds at every level.

I've seen at least 10 sites give it a 9/10.

Glad there's finally one over that.

I quite liked this review, but I'm not sold on their critique of microtransactions. It's unfair to criticise SSX for it, when it's more to do with general industry trends than anything else - in fact, it could've been a lot worse; you have the option not to spend a single penny more than retail and earn credits through geotags/events if you want. From a business perspective I fully understand the need to get money out of a game that must've been incredibly costly to make, but whatever.
