techno is such a broad term these days. at least how i understand it, techno kind of means all dancey electronic music, right? there's just soooo much out there.

Fucking love Basshunter, he was great live when I caught him in London. What type of Techno are you referring too? Like tunes said it's a broad term i'm not into Jungle or House so much but Drum bass is my thing if you can refer that to Techno, I don't really know the subdivisions for this genre. Then I can post some videos.

As you may/may not know, im a drum & bass expert =P so ill kinda guide you a bit on the subgenres of dnb.

Liquid: (Lighter drums, basslines are a bit more clean and the overall track follows a steady progression)

Liquid/Soul: (pretty much liquid, but with a more soulful sound)

Liquid/Melodic: (Newer style of liquid which focuses on a melodic lead)

Jump Up: (really bouncy dnb, heavy beats and crazy basslines)

Heavy Drum & Bass: (ok, so its really not called this, but its what i call it...)

When i think "techno" i think of Detroit Techno. I dont consider techno as combining all electronic music. I think the better term is Electronic Dance Music (EDM). its just much more fitting than techno.

Basically, the genre of techno that I'm into is the kind I posted as my favourites.

SPECIAL THANKS TO RE VIRUS FOR GETTING ME INTO TECHNO! I used think techno was just noise. :)

I'm definitely down with electronic music but I'm mostly into Psytrance/Goa with some vocal trance to mix it up every once in a while. I really dig Delirious Noon and Electric Universe among others:

thanks for not calling it techno :cheers

And yes, Psytrance is awesome as well. The only thing i hate about psytrance is actually finding good tracks. Theres a bunch of generic crap out there for the genre, but i guess its like that for alot of other electronic music genres. When you do find that good track tho, its all worth it.

btw, those tracks you posted are awesome!

I'd definitely consider Menog and Electric Universe to be top tier Psytrance with Delirious Noon and Space Tribe being serious up-and-comers. The best stuff imo is not SO riddled with layers that you lose the melody but not SO low key that you just have quarter note kicks and 16th note basslines.

I don't DJ but I'm starting a music group that's partially based in electronic partially based in acoustic and analog instruments and with vocals. Kind of a really folsky version of a electronic based group. Either with like a trip hop bpm feel or in 6/8 time.

Might not be everyone's cup of tea, but when I get some demoes down I'll be sure to post them here.

I don't but I work with a guy who does. His stage name is DJ Sim7. He has a monthly show called "United in Trance". It's pretty good. We've talked about collaborating but we haven't been able to find a time to do it (opposite days off and so on).

I dont know what the hell is going on here, but NONE of the YouTube links posted here are linking to real techno music. I bet most of you have no idea what techno is. Basshunter is as far away from techno as you could get.

It's not your fault though. It's Alvin Toffler's fault, who released a book in 1980 where he mistakenly referred to ALL electronic music as 'techno'. Since then, era after era have been followed by a common misconception that stupid dance remixes, happy hardcore and even some friggin trance music is simply being called 'techno' by the common listener, which is totally wrong. It's a shame, really.

Let me give some examples of what true techno actually sounds like. Most people don't like it or can't UNDERSTAND it. Techno is famous for the minimalistic, repetetive and industrial sound with less melodies and more emphasis on the drums. There are many different forms of techno, but in the end it all comes down to the minimalism.

This gives you one idea of what techno really is. I'd love to see this thread locked though, since It's already been filled with misconceptions of my beloved genre techno.

It's nothing to do with minimalism... it's all to do with soul.

^Yes, I do thank you for pointing that out Yoshi, however you made it seem like it was just your own opinion.

And sparks, of course I know techno is about soul. I consider the true techno producers to be some of the biggest music geniuses in history. You don't need to come here and tell me things about my favourite genre.

I think the title of this thread should be changed lol. Or i should just make a new topic that discusses all electronic dance music in general.
