Hi All:

DJ Atomika (the fictitious SSX3 DJ) refers to 1980's songs as "tragic 80's tunes."

Here are four reasons why 1980's music is uplifting:

1. Junction SSX3 4.024 M (Saved Replay): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E1znO36oCWU&feature=channel_video_title.

2. Launch Time SSX3 1.642 M (Saved Replay): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RrJLHMFjhAg&feature=channel_video_title.

3. Junction SSX3 Flipping (Saved Replay): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ds8pZGSnl1U&feature=channel_video_title. (WMG, the Ayatollah of the Internet, muted my music in this given video. As a result, I chose a song from YouTube's Audio Swap to fill the void.)

4. Perpendiculous SSX3 5.025 M (Saved Replay): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qosKNY7kPYE&feature=channel_video_title.

Don't you feel happier once you listened to the wonderful 1980's songs which I parried with various SSX3 Freestyle runs?

Take care, everyone, and enjoy the saved replays!

I personally love 80s cheese, but then again I have a really broad range of music, One of my favourite is 90s Bubblegum Pop. I think in regards to the videos the songs you mght have chosen are a little'slow, but personally I don't really find it uplifting... for me I listen when I like to chill and listen to something different. Particular faves of'the 80s are Duran Duran, Wham!, Madness, Adam and the Ants also Early Madonna, Blondie and then somewhat heavier stuff like Europe, Foreigner, Queen and Bowie.

Tainted love I know was the best selling single in England for the year of 1981, and it somewhat irritates me that the utter rubbish that is in the charts now is nothing compared to what great hits these guys had in the 80s, no one is going to remember what crap the X factor winner released last christmas, in fact I don't, where ABBAs Super Trooper will be remembered for decades.

Haha, Tears for Fears. Denmark blocked the last video based on content. Happens a lot around here. Tainted Love was a great cover of a great Soul song originally sung by Gloria Jones. The 80s for me was something I avoided for a long time, but I've recently come back to (well early 80s more specifically).

NA I too am a fan of Madness but more especially the Specials AKA. Blondie was great both the punk and the disco side.

I was always into the Pop Electronica side (and still am):
--- Kraftwerk - The Model (more 70s but laid down the template for all future electronic music) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QgS252XT_Ts
--- OMD (Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark) - Enola Gay http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d5XJ2GiR6Bo
--- Human League - Being Boiled http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bRC9K7iLUAw
--- John Foxx - Underpass http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HBMvUpBrWFQ
--- Gary Numan - Cars http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ldyx3KHOFXw
--- Yello - Oh Yeah http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Q7FFjUpVLg
--- Severed Heads - Dead Eyes Open (Aussie Band) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kLIi_ZMBfQs
--- Depeche Mode - Just Can't Get Enough http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a84L1hVVEls
--- Simple Minds - I Travel http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_6MwzSaBBQY

And then there was the power pop (post punk):
--- The Clash - Wrong 'em Boyo http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UD1SzgamWLQ
--- The Specials - A Message to You Rudi http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cntvEDbagAw
--- The Buzzcocks - Hollow Inside http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j6ldfq8h4oU put to Bleach video
--- The Jam - The Modern World http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oWrd9XuSKZg
--- Gang of Four - Anthrax http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Akz2efTdJ-E
--- X-Ray Spex - World Turned Dayglo http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uoifB3e_ZhM
--- The Cure (Early stuff) - Fire in Cairo http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7iGHgjOHyN8
--- Siouxsie & the Banshees - Happy House http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HeBMHnJqAvM
--- Echo & the Bunnymen - The Killing Moon http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aX1PwkgwsG0

Hope you enjoy!

Hi NA and crispncrunchy:

Thank you for providing me with feedback on my four 1980's-theme SSX3 freestyle videos, NA, and for sharing your favorite 1980's bands / songs with me. Thank you for all the links to the 1980's songs, crispncrunchy. I enjoyed every one of the songs.

One of my favorite gaming theme songs is Flock of Seagull's "I Ran." This tune was used in Grand Theft Auto, Vice City.

Growing up as child in the mid to late 1980's, I grew up on Boy George and the Culture Club, Talking Heads, Madonna, Cyndi Lauper, Duran Duran, Tears for Fears, Kenny Loggins, Bruce Springsteen, Queen, Bon Jovi, Michael Jackson, and Run DMC.

Duran Duran's "Being Followed," a song off their album, All We Need Is Now, sounds like a song written in 1980's. (The song was written in 2010.)

As far as 1990's music is concerned, I liked Soundgarten, Eddie Vetter (I like the songs Vetter did without Pearl Jam), Mudhoney, Wu-Tang Clan, Metallica, and Pantera.

The artist who dominated that charts in the 2000's was Eminem. Rakim Allah said if Eminem were a black rapper, "he'd be the next Muhammad Ali."

I am not really a fan of Disturbed, but enjoy listening to "The Haunted," "Deceiver," and "Warrior."

Unfortunately, today's rap sounds like an answering machine, and most of the metal has lost its hard, driving feel.

The first record which I owned as a child was a single of the Village People's "YMCA."

Some musicians are legends, such as Luciano Pavorotti, Eric Clapton, B.B. King, Buddy Guy, Bonnie Raitt, Roy Orbison, Bob Dylan, and Stevie Wonder.

Thank you for sharing your musical tastes with me. Now, I know that I'm not the only person who loves music from the 1980's!

Take care.

I don't know any of those songs except for no. 4 (perpendiculous) and Crispncrunchy's "Just can't get enough" though I know a different (more modern) version.

Springsteen was and still is a genius, I unfortunately was born in 89 but thankfully has a father whose music taste has driven me through life, as a result I am particularly fond of old school rock. Cinderella, Marillion, Rush, Maiden, Dio, Helloween, The Scorpions etc Springsteen is also one of those artists. Born in the USA is one of my favourite albums and Born to run is one of my favourite tracks.

Bon Jovi again is another one of these acts. New Jersey is a fantastic album followed closely by Keep the Faith andnSlippery when wet. Always in my opinion is the sadest love song of all time.

As far as 90s for me it's Aqua, Vengaboys, N*sync, Back street Boys, Ateens etc. For rock of the 90s I wasn't really into grunge and britpop, never into Blur, Nirvana or Oasis for example. For me it was all about the many great Power Metal Bands that formed in the late 90s, Sonata Arctica, Edguy, Stratovarius....

Hope this gives you an insight, I hadn't heard the track you mentioned, "I ran" before, I've just checked it out on youtue and will add it to my mp3 playe, I hear your views on metal now, but it depends what aspect you listen to. Can I suggest checking out a band called Serenity, particularly "State of Siege" maybe it's not an angle you would like but you might like it.

Thanks for your insight by the way you reminded me of a couple of bands I forgot to mention, and some I avoided heh i'm not really a fan of culture club.

Kubi, I'm also going to recommend:

Madness - House of Fun
Def Leppard - Run Riot
Springsteen - Born to Run
Bon Jovi - Fear
Madonna - Into the Groove

Madness at Glastonbury were fantastic, so good I went to see them on their tour. They're also in the new Kroenenburg advert: http://www.youtube.com/watch?nomobile=1&v=luSmhMoszXE

The Motörhead one is also good: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zts214ixKN0

Hi NA and Kubi:

I checked out NA's YT's links. The music really "grabbed my attention."

I forgot to mention that, in the 1990's, Duran Duran wrote a powerful ballad called "Ordinary World."

As far as the 1980's is concerned, two important artists are synonymous with that particular decade: Elton John and Billy Joel.

Of course, there are always questions about who is better. People often ask these two queries: 1) Who is better, The Beatles or The Rolling Stones? 2) Who is better, Led Zepplin or The Who? Whenever I am asked these questions, I always give the same reply: all four bands are equally as good.

Take care.

Would have to beg to differ with you there old chap. Beatles were musically more adept and more melodic. Stones were just bit harder (especially in the early days). For me Led Zepplin were way ahead of The Who... In fact I can't really put the Who in the same category as The Beatles, Stones & Led Zep. But I do try to avoid comparisons, it ultimately comes down to taste and the predicates for judging.

80s is only a small part of my musical canon. I grew up with Punk, New Wave & Synth Pop and collected many LPs and singles (most of which I sold just over a year ago to buy a Pioneer C-DJ). Then in the mid-80s I moved into Reggae and African styles. In the late 80s House and Techno arrived, revitalised my interest in electronic music and I started DJing. Somewhere in there I bought a lot of Hip-Hop and Ragamuffin (all the Hip-Hop got sold). In the early 90s I was doing a lot of private parties, playing way too commercial music. By the mid-90s I got sick of that and got into much deeper, soulful and minimal techno & house (hooked up with one of Sydney's leading DJs and started playing clubs). By the end of the 90s I had about 2000 12 inches. Some pretty mind bending stuff there.

Then in 99 I met and married a girl who wasn't into the club scene, was classically trained and much more into the Reggae & African styles. So I dropped out of the Techno scene and decided to explore a field of music had I had always liked but never really dipped into, 60s & 70s Soul, Funk & Jazz. In 2007 I started doing community radio (I had been wanting to get involved for a while). I pitched for a Soul, Funk, Reggae, African show. But was told that there was plenty of Soul & Funk on the station but they need Reggae & African. So I jumped at it with a pretty small collection. Needless to say I then started spending a lot of wages on expanding my Reggae and African collections and a lot of listening while playing SSX.

Two years later I got the opportunity to get my Soul, Funk show going on Saturday nights, I was doing that up until I came here to Denmark to study a semester of Architectural Technology. Having been unemployed or a student for the past 2.5 years has meant that I've not been able to buy as many CDs as I would like. Needless to say I have trolled many Blogs and Soulseek to maintain my collector's obsession.

iTunes currently stands at just over 18000 songs in 1470 albums.

Hi crispncrunchy:

Thank you for the reply--I found it very informative.

Now, I have a question for you about old songs covered by contemporary artists. I have three in mind:

1. Bob Marley and the Wailers' "I Shot the Sheriff," covered by Eric Clapton

2. Bob Marley and the Wailers' "No Woman, No Cry," covered by Fugees

3. Roberta Flack's "Killing Me Softly," covered by Fugees

In each of these cases, do you think that the older song is better than the new? Or, alternatively, do you think the reverse is true? To complicate matters to an even further extent, is it possible that, in some scenarios, the cover melody might be just as good as the original tune? (I'd like to clarify my statement: you need not to consider choice 1, 2, and 3 on a holistic scale. It is probable that you could, for example, like both songs in choice 1, like the older tune in choice 2, and prefer the newer melody in choice 3.)

Also, what are you favorite cover songs?

Take care.

That last question is a hard one to answer. My answer you may find a bit obscure... my favourite cover artist (at present) is Billy Paul, he is one incredible vocalist, sitting somewhere in that magic region between soul, jazz and folk and he always puts his stamp on a tune. Great examples are his version of Carole King's 'It's too Late', Elton John's 'Your Song' (can't stand Elton actually so this is a great example of the cover being better for me), then there's his jazz-dance versions of Sly Stone's 'Everyday People' & 'Compared to What' by Les McCann & Eddie Harris. You will find all these on YT except Everyday People.

I'm not familiar with Fugees versions of 2 & 3, I had better go listen. I will say that I rarely go for covers of Bob Marley in that he is such a significant artist for me.

I am familiar with Eric Clapton's version of I shot the Sheriff and in that case I prefer the Wailers version, however I must say I heard the Eric Clapton version on the radio as a boy and that was my introduction to the great Bob, Peter and Bunny.

In reality I sometimes like covers more than originals, sometime I like them equally. Where a cover doesn't bring something new to the table, I'm generally not interested. To be able to make any of these judgements I need to be familiar with the original version.

Hope no one minds my butting in here, but the topic of covers has intrieged me.
Like Crispy I sometimes like covers a lot more than the originals; here are a few here, I don't expect you to like them since they're a far cry from the original and not to everyones personal taste:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JLo02AquUCs Rasputin

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cdhBiCNT85c Lay All Your Love On Me

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OIh3nO6-V_A Whiskey in a Jar (Obviously) Now although Whiskey in a Jar can't really be traced back since it is an old Irish Drinking song there have been many covers; most noticably; Thin Lizzy and Metallica, I can't really say which one I like better.

On the subject of covers I'm also going to bring up what will probably be a taboo; and that is GLEE.

Now I'm sure that many people who love good music feel they've butchered half a dozen songs and maybe that's true. For me however, I think it's a great way to get kids introduced to new types of music, for sure; one of my friends now absolutely loves Journey, and the originals rather than the ones the show has covered, and she isn't into her rock and never would have listened to it otherwise. I think Glee has a great storyline and the way they've incorporated music is fantastic; as a Fleetwood Mac fan I was thrilled when they devoted a whole episode to Rumours.
So here are a few of my Glee favourites if you care to listen:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=01bm9CBQZRA For one I think this version of Faithfully with female vocals is beautiful. I feel the same about Don't stop believing, this is the actual mash up from the show, if you want the full versions search for the songs seperately on youtube, cause this version does cut some out of Don't Stop Believing.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BIaXIuisoHc Not too much a far cry from the original.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xnvM8gpUh_c

Anyway sorry for interrupting I couldn't resist.

Hey NA there is no butting in, you know this is an open conversation. :)

Yep metal/heavy rock is not really my cuppa tea. But I agree that your example certainly bring something that wasn't in the originals. Can't say that I liked the original Rasputin so I found Turisas as much of a novelty.

I can't say I've watched Glee, not much of a TV person to be honest. But I do have a number of friends who are devoted to the show. The final link was blocked, what is wrong with Denmark.

I reckon QP going to have something more productive to say. :mad

Hi NA and crispncrunchy:

I consider viewing Glee a waste of my time. I opt to spend my time reading stories written by Edgar Allen Poe, Mark Twain (Samuel Langhorne Clemens), and Joseph Conrad instead.

I also rarely watch American Idol. However, one of the times that I did pay that particular show credence, I was lucky to catch Il Vivo's (an Italian pop-opera group) cover of Luciano Pavorotti's "O Solo Mio." It was the best modern interpretation of Pavorotti's "O Solo Mio" that I have ever witnessed!

Here is Luciano Pavorotti's "O Solo Mio": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d_mLFHLSULw. Pavorotti's "O Solo Mio" is backgrounded by mostly violins. The last note is so powerful that it makes one's spine vibrate!

Now, here is Il Vivo's rendition of "O Solo Mio": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HbZvz0pXV48. All three tenors do a fine interpretation of Pavorotti's song. Gialuca Ginoble provides the vocals for most of the melody, while Piero Barone and Ignazio Boschetto chime it at certain key moments of the song, hitting incredibly high notes. In the end, all three tenors create the perfect harmony to bring "O Solo Mio" to a spectacular conclusion.

The background music is also contemporary, and features a heavy use of guitars, rather than violins, the instrument of choice in Pavorotti's performance. This, too, shows creativity on the part of the people who adapted a coventional song, and worked some adjustments into the music to the point where it would be more compatible with today's listeners' tastes. Hence, the individuals who arranged the contemporary version of "O Solo Mio" for Il Vivo to sing also deserve credit. While persons might like a great vocalists' impression of a poorly conducted song, they will be far more enthused by a well-composed melody which is articulated through great voices.

I can say that Pavorotti would be greatly impressed by Il Vivo's rendition of his song, even with all the modifications done to it to make "O Solo Mio" sound more modern.

Perhaps, if American Idol introduced talented singers--such as the ones displayed in Il Vivo during their live performance of "O Solo Mio" on American Idol--rather than pop-vocalists who struggle to distinguish themselves even with the aid of autotone dubbing, then American Idol would be a show worth viewing.

Take care.

Quotodian, do you always put "Hi ..." and "Take care" in your posts? Nothing against you, but it is quite annoying.

I didn't wake up in a grumpy mood this morning.

When I made the former comment, I noticed that there are people with musical talent who get paid very little in comparison to modern stars who lip-synch in concerts.

Who wants to go to a concert to watch a person lip-synch? This is a waste of the fans' time and money.

Anyway, in the next post, I am going to provide links to some more great 1980's songs.

It is kind of late for me now QP so I will check your links and give you a full response and rant on American Idol in the morning. I personally liked the Hi and Take Care I thought it was polite and.... gentlemanly.

Crispy, everything is wrong with Denmark they are the country that BANNED MARMITE for goodness sake :heh

Just looking at your list... The GoGo's I loved, I bought the original release on 7" in 1980, it was re-released in 82 and became a huge hit, went to #1 in Oz. Devo was always a favourite of mine, especially Mongoloid from their 1st LP. Men without Hats, I was given a promo copy of Safety Dance, I wonder what happened to that...

QP I also don't mind you using Hi & Take Care when you enter a conversation, just in the middle of a conversation... well if we were talking face to face, you wouldn't be saying Hi Crispy every time you responded. Besides its your signature, which is why I never said anything until young Baron brought it up.
