He associates black with his group of friends
He feels comfortable wearing black, his friends around him love wearing black. His ego is fed by wearing black. People who don't like him wearing black feed his ego when they say that wearing black is for losers... etc. etc. etc. and so forth.

Is there anything else? Why is it such a big deal in the first place?

Elevation, no change in consciousness happens from pointing out people's hypocrisy. Egos feed on persecution, they are entirely irrational, it doesn't help to do what you are doing right now, in fact, it is very much the product of ego to want to look right in every situation.

I could feed your fire a little more, but I decided not to. Because this argument is just plain petty. And the three of us are better than that.

Besides, the thread is about religion, not dress sense.

Just one thing. Internet or not, I do not lie.

Well, you may not think you are lying, but your ego might be lying to you.

What ego? I have none. Becuase I don't have any faith in myself.
and I guess while we're on the subject of ego (and the proevious post. I am sorry if I sound cheeky) but I am the only one out of my friends who wears black. So how could "ego" be fuelled with that? See when i say I don't associate the colour with anything, that just might have somethign to do with it.
Oh, I'm sorry if this sounds cheeky (it probably will), but if 'he' in your last post was referring to me, I happen to be female.

First I apologize for calling you a dude, but as far as what ego refers to...
The Egoic Self
Like I say, never take anything personally, the only reason people feel inferior or take things personally is due to an egoic self.

From the article wrote:
Complaining and reactivity are favorite mind patterns through which the ego strengthens itself. For many people, a large part of their mental-emotional activity consists of complaining and reacting against this or that. By doing this, you make others or a situation "wrong" and yourself "right." Through being "right," you feel superior, and through feeling superior, you strengthen your sense of self. In reality, of course, you are only strengthening the illusion of ego.

The egoic 'I' is the person that wants to look cool, who wants to have lots of friends, who wants to be rich, who feels that everything they do must be rewarded, the egoic 'I' tries to fulfill desires and will never do so... Don't feel bad about it, becoming conscious of the egoic 'I' is all it takes. The more aware you are of the 'egoic' self, the less it matters what others think, and the better person you will be.

And please, don't take anything personally, because someone who feels the need to be angry with another is only doing so not because he/she is mad, but because of his/her ego. How can you take something personally if it is simply someone's ego who is mad at you, and not the person?

Fair enough. I personally have always associated ego with big-headedness *shrug*

I'm not een sure if that last question is rhetorical or not..

Hey doyle the ego is part of the person, i can't separate the ego from the person. We don't have distinct and autonomous entities within ourselves (well not if we are sane).

That's not to say that I don't agree with your axiom of not taking things personally.

Agree to disagree, but take another look at the article i posted before hand...

So many people feel they have detached and dissolved their ego... ego is part of a human as much as society promotes their development, but as soon as you are conscious of it, it begins to dissolve.

It's because it is a trauma that is so deeply ingrained in the human psyche that it permeates into everything we do. We can't even properly communicate because our grammatical structures (noun-verb-object vs. *a single happening*) don't allow it.

And then some saw it different ways after Christ was crucified. Hence Christianity/Islam/others that believe that Jesus Christ is the Messiah. And Judaism (sp?), who belive the Messiah is yet to come

Why do the must fundamentalist christians seem less spiritual than atheists?

It seems like fanaticism and spiritualism are on opposite ends of the spectrum...

Noticed that too. Might just be 12 years of Catholic education talking though.

I hear ya. As an atheist i feel a need to be spiritual and to constantly question, and think about things, in order to justify my choice of belief.

Whereas a fundamentalist christian typically just accepts a bunch of viewpoints and ideas an absolute truth, and then stick to it without thinking about the big questions.

Perhaps it is becuase to them, it's as real as anything alse, so there's no need to be spiritual.

Hey ._.

Last time I posted here, I was Catholic, but now I don't even know what I am.

I don't know whether there is a higher being than us and don't care, I use philosophies from each religion to help me in my life (Buddha philosophy, Jesus philiosophy, etc.)

Any idea? I mean, I'm not one to label myself, but I am wondering if there is a name for this.

....lol @ Antoganist.

I have considered myself Agnostic at one time, but I don't know. I don't even like to label myself as agnostic, but I want to know what I am generally defined as.

You are simply one that seeks to be defined.

The more I think about it, the more I realize -

People only choose a religion for social reasons. There is no reason to choose one over another logically, but rather because of social pressures and your family.

That took me way too long to figure out.....
