XP
My experience with Vista isn't great. The Operating System seems to love crashing on me whenever I try to use it.
There is also the fact of memory requirement. I just think it's a bit excessive to have 2 GB of RAM to run an OS. (I'm pretty sure it's 2)

My laptop is XP. Albeit, it's slow, but I still love it...guess that's just what I'm accustomed to in the world of Microsoft

Incredibly.

This is off-topic and I'm sorry, but just while I'm thinking of one OS and using another, there's the small case of my preffered system is Leopard (mac) and I'm typing on XP xD

XP is solid.

Windows 7 will look alot more like XP then Vista. We are in the generation of mainstream eee pcs and people are realizing that linux doesn't need 2 gigs of ram and 2.8 ghz dual core processors.

Maybe the industry will finally break the trend of Wirth's law: Software is getting slower faster than hardware is getting faster.

Go with XP, or anything but Vista.

Maybe.
I'm yet to have anything to do with Linux though.
Macs don't really have that kind of capability either. My mum's Mac went straight from Tiger to Leopard without having to do anything to the system, or the RAM.

But yeah, I'm with you on that. The smaller companies really don't take up as much memory with just the OS

Definetly XP
Because Vista needs like ehh...
1 GB RAM :eek
So it's a waste of valuable memory
I've got xp. :)
And I'll keep it because it doesn't use that much memory.
The only problem is that a lot of hardware and software is produced for vista only.
Like the newest games work much better on a vista than on an XP.
But for now I'll keep my xp.
I've got a good pc so if I ever want vista I can just upgrade him. :cheers

My pc only has 2GB RAM.
*runs to pc-store*
*comes back when I get half the way*

I don't need more RAM for the moment because I have XP :cheers

Well, it's 2 GB RAM to run the Operating System. Then the extra so you can run GPPs and the Internet. So it ads up to a hell of a lot of memory which is just plain ott

I am staying with xp pro. In january I built myself a new desktop, its not a high end gaming machine or anything "leet" like that, but it is pretty good all around. Even adding 4 GBs of ram (yeah yeah i know xp only recognizes 3.5GBs -- but actually the system does use the other half gig for address retrieval and storage) I was never tempted to switch to Vista.

And with sp 3 out for xp, there really is no reason in my mind to switch anytime soon. One of the things I like most about xp pro is my ability to access anything on this puter from any other computer online(aka remote desktop), even down to using a program on this computer form work. That sort of functionality is only available on one or two Vista versions (not sure if the business version has it, I do know the ultimate version does include it) and those versions are so big and so memory intensive that I don't believe they are worth it.

The biggest thing for me is that vista, while certain versions are capable of running in 64 bit modes, for the most part does not, ie it runs in the same 32 bit mode that xp does. From that viewpoint, vista is not an upgrade, its a sidegrade, one that i can't justify. I also have a couple MS certifications related to XP Pro, so I am pretty comfortable with the OS I have, it would take a pretty big improvement for me to start the learning process all over again with a new OS.

As someone mentioned above, I too will be waiting for Windows 7. Thats gonna be the real upgrade.

I am still completely befuddled that the very same drivers listed and approved for use with XP are completely absent from Vista. One would think even as a fallback that alot of the drivers that were in XP would be included in Vista......Vista is just a mess even now, a year later.

New architecture meant writing all new drivers, which is hard work for the hardware vendors. We went thru the same with Windows XP and 98 before that. But this time they stuffed it completely.

Let's face it Vista is lemon, like Millennium Edition was. I might even wait for the next version in 2010 by then I will need a new PC.

me neither, but I think I am going to get a chance to soon at work. Its been so long since the last iteration in 03 that I am pretty curious to see whats changed. I am an xp pro man and thats what we use at work too, so im curious to see what sort of changes 08 brings to the table, and if it can and will extend the life of xp further.

08 briings - built in virtual server, IIS 7.0, improved Terminal Server. Plus Server Core where you define core roles for a Server and it locks down everything else & BitLocker - data encryption at the disk volume level. Really best to run on 64-bit platforms

ya know, thats more or less what i expected to hear -- that server 08 works best with 64 bit platforms. It makes sense of course and that is the direction we are all headed anyways, so I would have been suprised if support for 32 bit platforms was on par with 64 bit ones.

Ah well, I work in the tech field so I better get comfortable with change lol.

I found the Mac mini a very affordable way to start. And honestly, I find it runs a lot better than my G4 at work! I have a lot of problems with Adobe CS3 on that thing, but the mini handles it great.
