I have a quick question.

I'm going to make electronic music one of these days (when I can afford the tools).

I don't plan on getting into industry or anything; I'm just gonna make music for fun because I love music.

So, let's say I remix someone's song. Basically I do my own thing, but use some of that song's melodies and samples. Let's say I post that song for free, no strings attached.

Can someone come after me for using those musical ideas in my remix?

Also, let's say I set up some way to accept voluntary donations for my work. Can someone come after me then, even though I'm not actually selling the music itself?

Any input is appreciated!

What Cherokee did when my brother posted his own remix of one of their songs is they just told him to take it down. He had it posted on Soundcloud for a free download.
So I'm guessing the people would just tell you to take it down and if you don't then something bad might happen. That's all I got, hope that helped a little bit. And good luck! I look forward to hearing what you make :)

It depends on how close it is to the original. If you sample the song, you should be OK, that's covered under the Fair Use act. However, if you profit from it, that's a no-no.

Just make whatever the hell you want and don't worry about it.

It's not a problem until someone tells you it's a problem. And like the tickler said, if you're not making a profit, it's much less likely there will be a problem.

Also, just download some software and start messing around now! No reason to put it off until you have the "tools." You won't know what tools you need until you start!

Thanks for the info, guys. :) I was pretty much planning on doing whatever I wanted anyway.

Lord Elevation, I have been playing around with the stock stuff included with my DAW (Renoise) but I'm too lazy to hunt down good free VST instruments. :lol I want to just get the Native Instruments bundle and be taken care of.

I made a remix of Rihanna's track, Umbrella (back when it was a hit) and to this day I have never had a problem. Posted it on youtube, and you would think id get in trouble but i mean, look at the stacks of people doing remixes these days... its just too much for them to go out and take everyone down, the only ones they look for are the ones making money from it illegally.

Also, you can't go wrong with the NI VST's, sure they're pricey but i think theyre worth it. I was only able to afford FM8 right now, but im also gonna be buying more of their VSTs later. btw, Native Instruments is selling FM8 and Massive for 50% off right now, or in a bundle of 3 VSTs for 199$ what a deal!

I'm not pretty sure, but I know if any part of something that you "borrowed" from someone who owns that part, is entitled to that certain piece and you don't have rights to modify or change in any way without permission.

I say that you should ask kind permission from people to remix there songs for you to give credit e.g If you have a partnership with YouTube then 50% of profit can go to the artist who composed the original piece.

I hope this helps you and thanks.
Now i'm going to bed, c ya! :zzz
