When a class reaches level 20 in multiplayer you can promote the class. It resets the promoted class characters to level 1, adds 75 war assets in single player playthroughs and adds 10 levels to your multiplayer N7 ranking.

I played the first mass effect, and it was good, but it lacked that "wow" factor, and I eventually just deleted it off my computer.
