I've been noticing a lot of weird "random" posts which I think are by bots - they tend to make really general statements which have no relation to the topic at hand.

As a test I changed the "New Registration" question to "What is two plus two" to see if that would solve it, but that question was too generic and we ended up getting three Russian spam bots in about 3 hours. So I changed it back.

I may see about installing a mod that will limit the ability of new users to post links until they have a certain number of posts. I tested out the built in "Newly Registered Users" feature that came with the board but that doesn't allow you to limit link posting so I disabled it.

Just be aware of this stuff - I'm on top of it.

Phpbb 3 has a built in captcha - bots beat it in less than a month. No captcha options that work with phpbb are all that effective at the moment. We currently use a custom question, works pretty well.

We are getting posts from bots - I think. Their responses are so generic and don't pertain to the topic, but they aren't posting links so it's a little difficult to say whether or not they are damaging to the board.
