Greetings MerquryCity!

For the longest time I was unaware that there was a 'Gravitude Chat,' this is a fun little java window that allows one to chat at a much faster pace than conventional posting. The button is located on the top right navbar under Home/FAQ. This thread is not to spread that knowledge though, this is for others who would like an actual mIRC (chat) client setup so that they don't need to keep that annoying java window open all the time.

mIRC (Internet Relay Chat) is a small little chat program anyone can install with ease and have open on one's computer for easy communicating. The download for this program is FREE and located at: http://www.mirc.com/ I'm going to now go into a quick little setup on how to get yourself into the Gravitude Chat upon installing this free program!

Download the program from the website, and install it!
Upon installing, open the program and one should be prompted with the options box for first time load up. (if not one can type alt+o to reveal the options box)
Fill in your nickname, alt name, name, and email in the panel to the left called 'Connect'. (You don't really need to put in your email or full name if you don't want to this is just for your identity)
After you've filled in your nickname and such, you may also want to set your 'identD', which is located just under the 'Connect' plane. This is just another simple way to distinguish you from someone else. (IE: if your name is BigBaller1424 maybe you'll just make your IdentD 'Baller')
Ok! now you're almost there, hope I didn't lose you. Now, click OK to save your settings and you will now see a chat window named 'Satus'
This is your chat window! BUT you can also type commands into this window to make your IRC connect to our server!
Now you're ready! Just type this into the status window: /server irc.opera.com -j #SSX (You don't need to include the -j #SSX, but it will immediately join you to the SSX Channel so you don't need to then type /join #SSX)
You did it! If successful your mIRC should have connected to the network, then joined the #SSX channel.
Last step you may want to do is to register your nickname with the server so that no one else may use it except you! To do this, one can type: /nickserv register password email (Fill in the last two fields accordingly, and it will email you a verification code to accept!)
After you accept the code emailed to you. YOU'RE SET!

I hope this was easy to follow, and not too complex. I know many people such as myself having your browser open all the time to chat can be bothersome. Hope this helps, and hope to see more of you chatting away!

Just throwing this out there: For those of you (like me) who have multiple chat accounts from different providers (MSN, ICQ, AIM, XMPP/Gtalk, Skype, etc) Pidgin is a great solution. With the Skype API Plugin you get your Skype contacts into the same client as well. And, of course, IRC channels are a piece of cake.

A few years back I used Live Messenger, Gtalk client and mIRC. Safe to say, it often was a complete mess, but a mess that I mostly were comfortable with. Reluctantly, however, I started with trying Pidgin two-three years ago. The first months I didn't like it at all. Sure, it assembled all my contacts and accounts to one client, which was the main reason I started using it, but it didn't look and behave the way I wanted. Step by step, though, I managed to change the GUI to my likings, implement the right functionality with plugins and got a great overview of my chat logs.

Straight-from-the-box it's not that hard to get up and running, but if you give it a little bit of extra effort and tune the GUI, install a few nifty plugins of choice, it's really a dream to use, especially with multiple accounts.

fyi if anyone uses the opera browser you can just type irc://irc.opera.com/ssx in the address bar and it'll launch it's own built-in irc client in a new tab.

I'm gonna add some of these alternate ways to reach the chat onto the page itself, so that people aren't frustrated by that annoying "Too many IPs" error.

What? Nobody even mentioned Mac. This is all Windows so far.

Until now, because I came here to say that the Mac equivalent of the program Sonnergard is talking about is Adium. If you own a Mac there's a good chance you've got it already, so just add IRC to your services and off you go.

I've added an alternate link onto the chat page that you can use when you get that "Too Many IPs" error. That should take care of that. I also added a few minor warnings for noobs that don't know any better.
