How do I get an avatar???

Login, go under Profile up above on the navigation bar and pick your avatar. It's at the bottom. :china

Just link to one offsite - pretty much everyone can have any avatar they wish as long as they outside-host it.

No, not just the website. You have to include the actual image URL. For example, you don't just put http://www.gondee.com/. You put http://www.gondee.com/gondee.gif Then your image will show up. :china

Your host also has to allow outside linking of images - a lot of "free" providers like Geocities and Angelfire don't allow this.
