While it doesn't have much to do with the actual game, it's quite interesting.

Quote:
Electronic Arts has lost its bid to win the domain "ssx.com" from a holdings firm that bought it up in October. While the holdings firm parked the domain and briefly served ads leading to the game—an action that EA used as the basis for its complaint-an arbitration panel didn't see that as enough evidence of bad faith to justify turning over the domain.

The National Arbitration Forum, in its opinion, didn't think much of either side in this case. EA complained that the company holding SSX.com, Abstract Holdings International, made no diligent effort to determine whether SSX.com was in fact someone else's trademark. The National Arbitration Forum remarked that SSX "is perhaps a common law mark of a number of business and other entities in a number of lines of business all around the world." However, "Given the ease of searches using the common tools of the Internet, how much is it to ask of a retailer like [Abstract Holdings] to do a little extra work?"

Abstract Holdings International paid $200,000 for a lot of domain names, which included SSX.com. The National Arbitration Forum held its nose and said that Abstract had established rights or legitimate interests in the name.

Domain Name Wire noted that Abstract Holdings' purchase came in October 2011. The SSX reboot was revealed (albeit under the title SSX: Deadly Descents) in December 2010. Once again, it points to the need to sew up domain names before you announce, and title, a hot new game.

i just read it on Kotaku.
i think this is another case of Marketing slacking behind.

im starting to wonder how big is the actual team behind this game and why would they wait seriously so late to claim the domain name?
it was claimed in October, that was only like 2 months ago.

c'mon son, get it together.

Whilst I agree with Boogie I'm sort of dissapointed in this case. How can Arsenal football club manage to get a hat shop in a tiny town in Spain to change their name because Arsenale sounds too similar through court cases. But EA lose this which technically should be a closed case considering their trademarks and how this could potentially damage them. Ridiculous.

EA has the option to pay for the website domain, the issue here is that they were not granted it. Which is right. Just because they trademarked "SSX" does not give them the right to anything and everything called SSX. They probably would have paid for/acquired the domain upon reveal but it WAS going to be called Deady Descents. They dont want to buy another domain. They're going to have to pay for the domain if they want it, but I have a feeling they knew that to begin with.

I don't feel sorry for EA. Not a tad bit. Why didn't they buy the domain back in 2001? Everytime I google SSX I asked myself that question: "why don't they buy ssx.com??" Nobody took it and it was probably dead-cheap back then. Now you have to shell out $200,000. It's obvious that this company bought the domain because they knew EA had to buy it.

If you ask me, I want the EA Sports BIG branding back, but this is another story. :shrug

How can chelsea get an indian cigarette manuafacturer to pull their cover artwork as it looks similar (albeit blurred) to John Terry? That said, he'll be playing in China soon where there's no copyright... What I'm trying to say is a decent (connected and respected) lawyer can win almost anything....

But yes, it's obvious EA should have had this sewn up in the first place.... I'd be kicking myself. I mean, how many 3 letter domain names have you seen for sale recently?

Is it really that big of a deal? I'm not sure about you guys but when I discover a new game (or anything really) I just google it. I feel like I'm missing something important here lol.

They owned it for many years. They didn't renew it a few years ago, so it's kind of their fault for not keeping up with it.

Kinda sucks they didnt think about that in spring/early summer. I thought they already had a bunch of possible domain names when it was announced? But it is wrong that people register names thinking its a quick cash in (if thats the case?).

Other quick alternatives:
EA-SSX.com
ssxzoe.com, ssxelise.com, ssxmac.com etc etc.. (list all the characters linking to one site but depending which you use changes the index page image)
SSXUBER.com
SSX2012.com
ItsTricky.com
SSXnextgen.com
SSXPS3.com
SSXXBOX.com
RACE-TRICK-SURVIVE.COM
ssx-official-homepage.com

any others spring to mind?

What about SSX.net to make it like RiderNet? Or even www.Rider.net?

Doing something with ridernet would be kind of cool actually, especially if they plan on using it for future installments of the game as well.

Maybe supersnowcross.com? Meh, bit long, but ssx2012.com sounds okay, although yeti the problem with some of those names is that they would only be temporary, although itstricky.com seems good.

But still, ssx.com would have been great, maybe we can view this as in they were too busy making the game awesome? haha
