I've been playing SSX since 2001, and THANKS! go to you and your team for delivering the goods on this latest release! My GF and I have been hooked since the demo.

I wanted to put a UBER request out there for a release of a stereoscopic 3D patch/option for the game.

As I understand it, 3D was originally planned for the release, however that changed when the decision was made to go for faster steady frame rates. This is of course very logical, however IMO this game is to incredible to not be experienced in glorious 3D, even if the frame rate isn't as smooth. We request to please include whatever disclaimer is necessary to cover the topic, and release this feature as it would be one hell of an amazing experience to feel the beauty and speed of the game, and perform wingsuit stunts. For us the 3D experience over smoothness = Sweet Nectar!

I know I might not be in the majority on this request, and I don't even know if this request is possible to do? As I work on stereoscopic projects here in Hollywood, I am fully signed up for the 3d revolution, esp. when it comes to 3d gaming. So for me, my GF, and my 140 inch projection screen, we feel this feature would take this game from Epic to Legendary.

Thanks again Mr. Batty and Team SSX!

:)

Thank you for the kind note. If ever there was a title that could truly showcase the potential of 3D gaming, I personally feel SSX is it. Of course I might be slightly biased. ;)

Hey MoZe, I am with you bro! :) I think we might be in the minority though, at least here on Merq. Here is a thread I started way back before the game came out about a possible 3d option.......

viewtopic.php?f=18&t=9470&hilit=3d+support+for+ssx+2012

The big problem I see right now with 3d and the current generation of console hardware is the resolution hit that happens in order to get 3d going. Ghosting sucks as well, but that is a display issue which will get better as the tech gets better and DLP users are already enjooying ghost free 3d.

Having said all that, I would LOVE a 3d option for SSX since I think 3d has the most potential with gaming from what I have seen. :thumbsup

What projector/screen setup are you using? 140" for SSX must be incredible! I am using a JVC RS45 with a 9' wide 2.35 2.8 high power screen right now.

I agree. With the the size and depth of some of the tracks like Bulldog, Mornin Tiger, Serenity, The Big Show etc.......the 3d potential is extremely high. The depth perception would kick some serious ass I bet and really suck you into the game. :yes One Step Ahead in 3d would be crazy intense!

I'd love SSX 3D. I've been waiting to take the plunge myself and this would probably tip me over the edge.

Also, Plasma (in particular the Panasonic VT series) has the best ghost-free 3D implementation I've seen. I have been keeping an eye on the 58" for a while now...

3d is a lame trend, to me....much like touch screens and motion gaming. To me, they all need to go away and never come back.

3D's definitely gimmicky. I don't see the point in investing on something that very few would actually use. Only PS3 users can use it so that's half of SSX fanbase right there, and then the fact that you need a very expensive 3D TV to use it restricts a big chunk of the PS3 fanbase.

...I mean, what's the point?

XBOX does 3d gaming as well.

I respect your opinion, but strongly disagree. Seeing 3d at home on a large projection screen can be really incredible depending on the material. Have you seen a large 3d front projection setup in someones house? It might change your mind :)

I personally don't like looking at 3d displays, they bother my eyes. The last 3d movie I saw was at Liberty Science Center and it was about the planets. And even then it kinda bothered me. Trying to wear the glasses over my glasses was a pain in the arse. :lol

What about the people who can't see 3d? I know a few...do they just get left out in the cold? Pay for a feature they can never use? Etc. It can be a catch 22.

If I want 3d, I just look around me. :P :heh

Fair enough. :) If you do ever have the opportunity to see a nice large screen home 3d setup though, give it another chance. Combined with a powerful audio system, it can be a LOT of fun. We watched Underworld Awakening a few nights ago at 9' wide in 3d and combined with the insane audio/bass hitting nearly 130db peaks, it was an amazing experience!

Stereo blind, or people who cant see 3d is a problem for some. I have read reports that it might be as high as 1 in 10. If you happen to be one of these unfortunate few, yeah I guess you are out of luck which does suck.

Out of curiosity, for those of you who do have 3D TV's do you have active or passive glasses? I've seen movies and played games on LG's with the small, cheap passive glasses and Sony's with the big expensive active glasses.

Curious to hear some feedback on both.

3D is such a hopeless gimmick that will die sooner or later. Nothing wastes more resources than rendering the same freaking image twice for a 3D effect.

I have only used active with the 2 3d projectors I have owned and that is basically the only way you can do 3d with a single unit front projection system. With front projection, the only way to do passive is to literally buy 2 projectors, stack them and each projector handles its own eye. LG actually has a single projector solution that can do this, but it is still basically 2 projectors in 1 box and is way out of budget for the vast majority as it retails for $15,000. Stacking and aligning 2 projectors is a real PITA and a giant headache from most reports, but apparently once you get it all setup is pretty awesome and you have the benefit of nice, light comfortable glasses at that point.

As far as passive vs active with flat panels, here are a couple of threads over on AVS where people are throwing out opinions and pluses/minuses on both...........

One thing to keep in mind that is very important, especially with 3d gaming which is a TORTURE test for 3d displays is ghosting. The ONLY display tech right now that is capable of truly ghost free 3d is DLP unfortunately. DLP can have other drawbacks like rainbow effect depending on the individual, but they do not ghost (single chip DLP at least and assuming the glasses are in sync with the display).

I think active 3D is way better. I get a headache from passive 3D. Besides the 3D effects, I like what it can do for MP when youre playing with friends at home. 2 people can see something different on the same screen. There are no 3D effects when you play like that, but it's way better then splitscreen. I don't own a 3D-TV myself but a friend of mine does and I have to say I was impressed by it. Before I saw active 3D I didn't think 3D had a future but this changes my mind a little.

Not a fan of 3D I don't think its quite there yet in terms of technology and smoothness. I watch movies in 2D it is more relaxing and less tiring on the eyes. No film I have watched in 3D has been less amazing when I got it home on Blu-Ray. In fact its been slightly better and more enjoyable. Games I imagine would be exactly the same. Zelda in 3D was good but exactly the same enjoyment was had with the 3D off.

i have no interest in 3D....anything. Yea, its cool. but it just seems like a hassle to wear the glasses when i already wear glasses.

I'm not sure I've seen seen something that inspires so much disdain. Have all of you who are so opposed to 3D actually tried it? I don't care for "more character voices, skins, costumes, etc" in SSX... but I'm not going to step into any thread about it and say "it's stupid and a waste of time and I'd like to see all effort go to features I like". Seems odd to me.

Admittedly there is absolutely a ton of terribly uninspiring "3D" and there are a lot of displays and things to sort through as well as wearing the glasses. It's sadly not nearly as out of the box as it ought to be and there are quite a few crappy displays/glasses out there that can make it look bad. However, I have seen some breathtaking stuff and I would personally love to see it in SSX.

FWIW I don't care for 3D movies. I think the possibility of 3D is much greater in games than movies/TV.

I've never seen ghosting on any of the Panasonic plasmas that display 3D that I have demoed. I've seen it on a variety of other systems (although I must admit I have not demo'd a DLP as I don't like the DLP image very much). Obviously, when it comes to something like this YMMV, but it's been waaaaaay better than the other 3D plasma vendors and any of the LCDs I've seen (which are terrible).

I like the idea of seeing something like SSX in 3D, just the landscape alone could be awesome and having seen a few things now on a friends tv it looks really cool if done well. I just have a problem with glasses on glasses (although not for games just movies) and I dont have the cash to invest into it. I do think its a limited market but one that is improving as well as becoming cheaper.

If they can do a TV that doesnt require glasses with out blurring or motion fuzz/ghost then Id be interested in saving some pennys for it.

If its an easy add then go for it for those that want it, if it deters/delays from DLC for everyone, then no, leave it alone until next time.

I've got active glasses. I've got a pretty expensive Sony TV but rarely watch anything in 3D let alone play games. There's definitely a big future in 3D gaming but not in its current form. Gaming lends itself to a 3D experience more than movies I think, much more in fact. I'm not a fan of wearing the big relatively heavy glasses but that aside the PS3 is nowhere near being powerful enough to render 3D in the lovely high definition it deserves. Sony marketed Motorstorm Apocalypse as the pinnacle of the PS3's 3D capability but it looks pretty rubbish. The ghosting is ridiculous and the drop in resolution almost makes it look like a PS2 game upscaled.

Be interesting to see how far Sony push it with the PS4. I guess they have more of a vested interest in making the tech work over Microsoft.

So I'd love a 3D SSX, it's a game that would really lend itself to the experience, but not until there's a console out there that can really handle it properly. Its too much of a step sideways at the moment. Its great to add that extra dimension, much less great with the ghosting and drop in resolution.

I would agree with you that the Panny plasmas (at least the one I have some experience with which a friend owns) are "better" than other flat panels I have seen as far as ghosting goes, but ghost free they are not. A friend of mine swapped out a Sony 3d Bravia set for a Panny 3d set and also owns the same 3d projector I do (JVC RS45). I only saw the Sony briefly when he first got it nearly 2 years ago and I was oblivious to all things 3d at the time including ghosting.......to me, the Sony looked great. Having said that, when he got his JVC projector, he was able to do quite a few comparisons of ghost heavy scenes....long story short, some scenes that ghosted on the JVC did not ghost on the Sony and some that ghosted on the Sony did not ghost on the JVC AND some scenes ghosted on both. Gaming ghosted terribly in general on both.

Out went the Sony and in went a Panny plasma. The Panny did a better job with ghosting compared to either the JVC or Sony overall, but it was far from ghost free. I have seen his Panny 3d set a few times and I was very familiar with my own JVC RS40 and RS45 at this point, both of which are considered among the worst (lucky me :cry ) as far as non DLP front projectors for 3d as far as ghosting goes. The Panny to my eyes was noticeably better with ghosting in general vs our JVCs, but again was certainly not ghost free. Throwing in some known ghost heavy scenes that commonly trip up most non DLP 3d displays which include scenes from Despicable Me, IMAX: Grand Canyon and a few others showed ghosting on the Panny as well. Gaming was even worse (it always is for non DLP displays) and had considerable ghosting on both Motorstorm Pacific Rift and whatever COD game he had going in 3d (sorry, not real familiar with COD so I cant tell you which one it was). I would say both ghosted less then what I get with my JVC, but still to an annoying degree which I found distracting.

So the Panny is far from ghost free is what I am getting at, BUT among non DLP active 3d displays I would have to think it is among the best from what I have seen. If ghost free is your goal though, especially for gaming which is just torture for non DLP displays, DLP is in a league of its own right now. A different friend of mine has a Acer 5360 DLP projector and I am always amazed going over there how this little projector which cost a fraction of what my otherwise nice JVC cost just kills it when it comes to crosstalk performance :glare We have thrown every known notorious ghost heavy scene (at least out of the 3d blu discs we own) from blu ray 3d, gaming and even 2d>3d conversion and there is flat out no ghosting to be found which is the common theme among DLP owners. The ONLY way you will see ghosting with single chip DLP is if the glasses are out of sync and this can be fixed either through and adjustment OR buying different glasses.

Various comparisons/studies with DLP vs non DLP active 3d displays over at AVS over the last year or so have confirmed the same thing.........single chip DLP shows no visible ghosting assuming the glasses are in sync and all other active display types will show ghosting to one degree or another (some are worse than others).

For another feel of what the Panny plasma sets do as far as ghosting when it comes to 3d, just read the 3d reviews by Nate Boss on Highdefdigest.com. Nate uses a Panny 46" 3d set for his reviews (you can see his review gear under the "more about our gear" section) http://www.highdefdigest.com/gear.html Nates reviews start on page 40 of this "sort by reviewer" link........

http://bluray.highdefdigest.com/reviews_reviewer.html?page=40

He has reviewed quite a few 3d titles all of which were reviewed on his Panny plasma. One thing to keep in mind, Nate (incorrectly) blames the transfer (the blu ray disc) for ghosting in his reviews. Ghosting is a hardware issue (display and/or glasses) so when he mentions ghosting what he is basically telling the reader is how his particular set does with this ugly video artifact.

Dude, sorry for the long post, but if this thread has not made it obvious, I am a big Home Theater nut. I LOVE talking about all of this shit. I certainly dont know everything, far from it, BUT I do have a firm grasp on ghosting at this point from everything I have seen, read and experienced for myself when it comes to active 3d. DLP has its drawbacks compared to LCD, Plasma, Lcos, but the one area it stands by itself in right at the moment as far as 3d goes is its complete lack of visible crosstalk/ghosting.

Having said all that, I own a 46" Panny plasma, non 3d version and it has given me 3+ years of excellent entertainment. I would buy it again in a heartbeat. As far as an all around set and assuming you still plan on doing your vast majority of viewing in the 2d dimension, they are awesome sets IMO. I am sure you will also really enjoy it for 3d (I doubt you are going to be as picky as someone like me :P ), but just be aware that if you are expecting ghost free 3d for gaming, you will be disappointed.

Good luck though man with whatever you buy. Every set has its pluses and minuses, but as long as the former outweigh the latter you are doing good. :) It really sucks when the latter outweigh the former. :mad

Thanks for the reply Mr. Batty!! ...and for not saying a hard "no" to the request! :D
Also, I have used both passive and active glasses, and I like the DLP active glasses the best. Overall in my opinion, passive reduces eye fatigue since there is no shutter effect, while active does a little better on representing the 3D depth and parallax.

Todd Smith- At work we have awesome 4k DLP's to play with, at home I have a simple Acer DLP and the VIP3D conversion box. I made the decision to go 3D early last year (when Mortal Kombat was released in 3D), and when I was looking into a home setup i found that for a TV it would have been around $1200+ for a good Panny/Samsung 3D TV, so I went looking and then I realized for 3D bigger really is better! Found my Acer projector for under $500, got the VIP3D box for around $500 and then some glasses. All said an done it was around $1200 and looks AWESOME!! I am still working on making/painting a screen since I don't want to pay for the 140' screen, so right now I'm just throwing onto my white wall, and it still kicks major ass! I still can't believe I almost bought a TV instead of the projector, and with the 7.1 Polk setup as well.. I'm guessing you know, it's pretty cool when people come over and see the setup, everyone thinks that it and good 3D has to cost alot of money, and I love when I tell them the price, how easy it was and then they want to go do it themselves. FUN!

To the rest of the thread, thanks for your feedback. I STRONGLY encourage those of you who don't easily get eye fatigue, don't hate the glasses, and can experience 3D bliss, to go the cheap way right now while we are still limited to glasses, and get a DLP projector. As mentioned above there is no ghosting, and I've never had anyone in my "Theater" complain about the glasses or rainbow effect. In fact they only complain that I'm being selfish by not having them come over more often to play. 3D movies are fun, but 3D Gaming really is where 3D will have a strong future. It's much more immersive spatially and really takes the experience up to a degree unparalleled by 2D. It really comes down to GOOD games getting the 3D treatment, like hopefully SSX will! (?)

Also, since it was mentioned above, I'm not nearly as excited about motion controlled gaming yet, it's kinda fun but to me that is what is still gimmicky. It will get there but I haven't played many games that I've wanted to play for more than 10min. But also on the real, I'm lazy most times and just want to relax with my 3D glasses on and only move my thumbs. :thumbsup
